What McCall Research Fellows Will Do
McCall Research Fellows will support this work through a combination of oral history, archival research and qualitative analysis. Responsibilities include:
• Conducting oral history interviews with descendants, colleagues and community members
• Building rapport with interviewees and creating space for respectful, ethical storytelling
• Assisting with transcription, organization and analysis of qualitative data
• Preparing interview summaries, field notes and research memos
• Conducting background research on historical figures, movements, churches and communities
• Identifying themes and insights across interviews and sources
• Supporting the preparation of reports, presentations and public-facing materials
• Participating in regular check-ins with the Director of Research and Administration
• Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical research standards
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applicants who bring curiosity, care and a commitment to racial justice. Ideal candidates will have:
• A bachelor’s degree in history, African American Studies, sociology, public history, theology or a related field (master’s students preferred)
• Experience or training in oral history, public history or community-based research
• Strong writing, note-taking and organizational skills
• Comfort conducting interviews and engaging sensitive historical material
• Familiarity with qualitative research methods
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
• A demonstrated commitment to racial justice and ethical research practices
Additional Qualification
For one of the two positions, fluency in Spanish (speaking, reading, and writing) is required.
Time Commitment & Compensation
• Approximately 15 hours per week
• Monthly stipend: $1,625 (equivalent to $25/hour)
• Remote temporary position with some travel possible
